Furukawa Electric Introduces Newly Developed 2.5Gbps cooled DFB-LD in mini-DIL Package

March 19, 2003

Furukawa Electric has developed 2.5Gbps cooled DFB-LD module for Long Reach (LR) and Metro applications in smalle package. The new product in FITEL brand features built-in TEC, thermo electric cooler, inside as well as flexible connections such as pigtail and receptacle.mini-DIL Package

Increasing communication traffic has been loaded on greater capacity for data transmission. High speed communication has become popular deployment of DWDM, Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing, system and an adoption of 10Gbps data rate.

To date, signal sources DFB-LD modules for DWDM or long distance 2.5/10Gbps transmission has employed 14-pin butterfly packages, the standard in conventional modules with built-in TEC. But, increasing demand for higher capacity resulted in needs for smaller sized packages even for such applications, notably DWDM pluggable transceiver modules*1.

*1: MSA on DWDM pluggable transceiver modules has been introduced by Agilent, Nortel Networks and Agere Systems.

The new DFB-LD module in Mini-DIL, Dual In Line, package developed by Furukawa Electric offers the same functions and performances as the conventional 14-pin butterfly package modules and approximately one-fifth in size. It is also available for a lower price compared to a 14-pin butterfly module, and could reduce manufacturing cost in our customers.

The newly developed Mini-DIL type DFB-LD module has its pin layout compatible with the 8-pin MSA, Multi Source Agreement, conventionally used in uncooled Mini-DIL type LD modules. It enables the customers to apply the same electric circuit layout as the conventional uncooled LD modules.

Further developments on products for 10Gbps application such as SONET/SDH-OC192 and 10Gbps Ethernet will continue.

Furukawa Electric will exhibit this new product at OFC 2003 (Optical Fiber Communication Conference 2003), in Atlanta (Georgia, USA) in March 2003.
